I have been wanting to try out this new Japanese Ramen joint in Melbourne CBD for some time now but didn’t as there’s  always a queue outside the shop all the time, since they opened. I am not a big fan of queuing up for food and if I do, it better be worth my while.
 
Finally, I decided to join the queue just to experience what is the fuss about this Japanese Ramen joint, where there’s a queue all the time. The wait was around 20-30 minutes and my expectation on the ramen is already on a peak level.
 
The shop was noisy, mostly with the staff shouting in Japanese randomly at one another. I honestly have no idea what are they shouting for when there are no customers entering or existing the premise. It started to feel like they are shouting for the sake of shouting or maybe to create the ambience of a crowded ramen shop/stall in Tokyo, Japan. After some time, I cannot wait to get out of the that shop.
 
For starters, we had the Chicken Karaage. It was very good – not oily and super crispy, and this could be as good as it get. I wouldn’t mind recommending this entrée dish.
 
Then the ramen bowls started to arrive and we cannot wait to dip our soup spoons into the bowls to have a taste of the hot broth.  How was it? I think it is pretty good, full of flavour  but not overpowering – I prefer the Signature Tonkotsu over the Black Tonkotsu. The Black Tonkotsu tasted unique at the start but the more I have it, I realised that it has a strange taste to it. There’s not that many ingredients in the bowls as compared to other good ramen joints I have been before. If you want the extras (lava egg, seaweed, etc.), you would have to pay for it.
 
I think this place is over rated. Sure thing that the broth is nice, but it is not that nice for me to queue for.
 
Overall, the ramen here is quite pricey for the portion and non-extra ingredients you are getting. It will definitely not score high for ‘value for money’.
 
I left the place with a dissatisfied taste buds and tummy and I don’t think I will be queuing and eating here again … at least for the near future.
 
My personal favourite #1 ramen joint in Melbourne is still Fukuryu Ramen.  I originally had high hopes that Hakata Gensuke could be the new #1 but unfortunately not. They are still on my top 5 ramen joint in Melbourne so far.
